VoIP phone system

A VoIP phone system for UK businesses, with no handsets

A VoIP phone system carries your business calls over the internet instead of a copper phone line. Line gives you a UK business number that works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, in an app on the mobile and laptop you already own. Routing, voicemail, texts, and a shared inbox come with it.

From £4 a month. Pay only for the calls and texts you use. No minimum term.

Quick answers

What is VoIP?
Voice over Internet Protocol. Your call travels over the internet instead of a traditional phone line. The person you call notices nothing.
What do I need?
The Line app and about 100 kbps of upload and download per call. Almost any UK broadband, 4G, or 5G connection carries several calls at once.
Can I call normal phone numbers?
Yes. VoIP calls reach any UK mobile or landline. The other person does not need VoIP or an app.

Will VoIP work on your connection?

Enter the upload and download speeds from any broadband speed test.

Speeds available at your address (Ofcom)

80

Enough for 80 calls at the same time.

100 kbps per call each way, with a fifth of the line left for everything else. Your upload speed sets the limit.

What each part does for you

The same business number rings whichever devices you choose, wherever they are.

Answer on whatever is in front of you

Laptop at the desk, mobile in the van. The number and the history are the same on both, so no customer hears 'I'll call you back from the office'.

Wi-Fi or mobile data

The app uses whichever connection the phone has. When the office broadband is down, calls still ring over 4G or 5G.

Routing before it rings

Opening hours, ring-all, voicemail, missed-call texts, and the AI receptionist sit in front of every call, so no call rings out unanswered.

Calls next to texts

Each call is logged in the customer's thread with their texts and your notes. Nobody hunts through a separate call log.

Your business caller ID

Outgoing calls show your business number. Customers see a number they know, and call the business back, not your personal phone.

Nothing left on copper

Line does not use the analogue network, so the January 2027 switch-off changes nothing for you.

Set up in an afternoon

No engineer, no hardware, no contract. Three steps from sign-up to your first call.

  1. 1

    Check your connection

Use the check above with a speed test from the Wi-Fi and mobile network you use during the day.

  2. 2

    Add your number

Pick a new UK number or move the one customers already call.

  3. 3

    Test the edge cases

Inbound, outbound, no answer, out of hours, and caller ID. Then tell your customers.

What makes a VoIP call work

A good connection and good routing. Line handles the routing for you.

When this happensLine does thisSo you get
Solid Wi-Fi or 4GThe app rings and carries the call over the live connection.Clear audio on the device you're holding.
You're busy or offlineThe call moves to the next step instead of ringing forever.A teammate, voicemail, a text, or the AI receptionist picks it up.
You call a customer backThe call goes out through Line with your business caller ID.Customers see the number they know.

Landline, Wi-Fi calling, or VoIP

Worth knowing

The old landline network switches off in January 2027
Openreach is retiring the analogue phone network on 31 January 2027. A business still on a traditional landline needs a digital replacement before then. Moving early means you choose the timing, not your provider.
A business call needs about 100 kbps each way
That is the figure for the heavier of the two codecs Line's calls use; the lighter one needs 40 kbps. Speed is rarely the problem on UK broadband. A stable connection is: aim for a round trip under 200 ms, jitter under 30 ms, and packet loss under 3%.
